SADC Database

Dear Colleagues,

DEVELOPMENT OF DATABASE / DIRECTORY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH
INSTITUTIONS AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE SADC REGION

"...Recognising that the development of human capital to its fullest po-
tential is the sine quo non for tackling socio-economic problems facing
the region and further acknowledging that both socio-economic and tech-
nological research is crucial for sustainable development within the
region."
(SADC Protocol on Education and Training)

Mindful of the fact that the SADC member states are making a concerted
effort to enhance development opportunities within the region, the Di-
rectorate of International Scientific Collaboration (ISC) within the
Division of the Centre for Science Development (CSD) at the Human Sci-
ences Research Council (HSRC) is currently in the process of establish-
ing a Database/Directory of Social Science Research Institutions and
Universities within the SADC region. To this effect we urgently require
your assistance in providing information needed in order to establish
such a Database.

The Database/Directory will be easily accessible via the internet and
will be published at a later stage. It may be used as a vital Network-
ing tool for academics/researchers/scientists and a host of other per-
sons wishing to make cross-regional contacts. With easy access to such
a Database/Directory, individuals may be able to engage in collabora-
tive work with their counterparts in any one of the member states. By
establishing such a Directory the ISC hopes to proactively maximise the
benefits of the Human Resource base within the region.

Should you wish to be included within the Database/Directory, please
request the questionnaire (via e-mail) and return it to me at the HSRC,
no later than 15 April 1999. Should you have any information pertaining
to Social Science Research Councils and Universities within your coun-
try, please furnish us with the details and a copy of the questionnaire
will be sent to the respective institutions / organisations.
