Short Course on Tropical Diseases Control Programmes
----------------------------------------------------
International Course on Planning and Management of Tropical
Diseases Control Programmes
April 25 - June 23, 2000
Institute of Tropical Medicine
Antwerp, Belgium
INTRODUCTION
Although diseases conventionally referred to as tropical are by
no means confined to the tropics, they represent a high burden
in terms of mortality and morbidity mainly for the so-called
'developing countries'. Their control represents a challenge
for these countries and their health services because of the
specific context and the limitations into which a specific pro-
gramme has to evolve. Health professionals require an 'ad hoc'
knowledge and skills to meet this challenge.
The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp is an in-
ternationally recognised centre of excellence for its research,
training and interventions on disease such as malaria, schisto-
somiasis, sleeping sickness, TB, HIV/AIDS and others. This
course will draw on the unique expertise of the Institute and
its network-partners, combining in-depth knowledge of specific
diseases with extensive experience in the organisation and
evaluation of health services. The course is intended for
health professionals and scientists involved in, or responsible
for communicable disease control programmes. A Masters in Pub-
lic Health training is required for candidates to be considered
for admission.
COURSE CONTENT
Students will receive up-to-date training in problems / contro-
versies pertaining to specific diseases as well as on the ele-
ments necessary for the formulation of integrated strategies.
The focus will be on the appraisal of their public health im-
portance and the development of specific control methods, with
an emphasis on integrated strategies and inter-sector collabo-
ration. The main themes covered include: HIV/AIDS, Malaria, TB,
other tropical diseases of public health importance, integrated
strategies and final exercise
After completion of the course participants will have learned
how to:
- Assess the importance of the different components of health
problems;

control;

with focus on accessibility, affordability and sustainability;

phasis on case-studies and practical exercises involving par-

their country of origin. Small group sessions will form a large
part of the course.
