SatelLife's experience over the last decade certainly confirms the
challenges which Helga described regarding access to connectivity. How-
ever, in several HealthNet partner countries, such as Kenya, Uganda,
and Nepal, we have seen increasing access to e-mail services outside
the capital cities. Admittedly direct Internet access is still a luxury
which few health professionals can afford. If a Web site is created for
the clinical guidelines and other relevant material, we can offer the
use of our GetWeb server which can retrieve the textual content of Web
pages via e-mail messages. Using GetWeb, together with mailing lists
for the distribution of material, will ensure that those who only have
access to e-mail will not be excluded.

On the issue of training health professionals, SatelLife and HealthNet
Kenya are establishing a Regional Information Technology Training Cen-
tre in Nairobi, a project funded by the World Bank under the InfoDev
initiative. Participants, recruited from the East Africa region for the
first round of courses, will be trained in the use of the new informa-
tion technology tools to access health information.

Helga, this is a tremendously valuable and relevant concept which you
have presented. Let us know how you wish to proceed with all those who
have expressed interest.
