Supercourse Update- July 1999
------------------------

Dear Friends,

One of our faculty in the supercourse has just been recognized in THE
LANCET. Dr. Ana Manusic and the Croation Medical Journal was described
in a series of articles (Croatia and Bosnia: the imprints of war --
Restoration. Lancet 1999, 353:223-28). Ana's picture is on pg. 226. It
is quite a nice article, and we are proud of Ana.

Ron presented at the meeting of the editors of Nature a few weeks ago.
Nature is a wonderful set of journals, however, they do not have as yet

an Internet Culture. He was asked to shake them up a little bit. There
were about 60 editors from all the different Nature journals. As part
of the presention he overviewd the concept of a limtied access server
so that we could get journals into the developing countries. This was
received quite well, and we should shortly know what transpires. The
difficulty is for countries such as Brazil, Argentina, South Africa,
China, etc. The editors are afraid of losing sales. We talked about the

possibility of the journals charging for a site license say to the
medical schools, or to the Ministry of health. If say the medical
school at La Palta, Argentina made an arrangement with Nature, everyone

connected to the University could have access to the Journal, with no
individual subscriptions, unless someone wanted the paper journal. This

would be priced so that the schools could afford it, plus other jour-
nals. We are interested in your opinion. The Lancet announced a pre
print server for developing countries; we are going to approach them
next to see if they would open up their journals as well.

The magazine the Economist last month had a wonderful overview of e-
commerce and e-business. Much of this we could think to incorporate in
the future into the Global Health Network.

Mirrored Sites:

We have 19 mirror site with one or two more mirror site opening soon.
The mirror sites dramatically improve the retrieving time of the lec-
ture on the Supercourse and facilitate the utilization for local users.

EunRyoung Sa who joined our team recently is building the home page
(www.pitt.edu/~super1/mirror/list.htm) listing all the mirror sites of
the Supercourse around the world. She is contacting each mirror site
now. If you have established a mirrored site and have not received an
e-mail from her, please contact her at <eunsa+@pitt.edu>

Global Pathology Supercourse:

Dr. Zeiler WB, the president of the World Association of Societies of
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (WASP) announced that the WASP would
develop a new Internet training course of the Global Pathology Super-
course in collaboration with the Supercourse. There are currently two
lectures on haemoglobinopathies. You can locate the course at:

http://www.dokkyomed.ac.jp/dep-k/cli-path/WASP-Glo.html

to which a link is made from the front page of the Supercourse.

New lectures:

We have been continuously receiving new lectures in various topics. The

following lectures will be soon on the Supercourse: two lectures on
Disaster epidemiology, Case crossover design, Military epidemiology,
and Health promotion. Your contributions by sharing your best lectures
would be always appreciated.

Faculty:

The number of faculty members continues to increase. We currently have
1095 faculty from 99 countries.

Best regards,

Deb, Akira, Ron, Benjamin, Eun
