PROGRAMMES
1. "Soul Buddies" - South Africa - 1st 8 episodes of the 26-part TV
series component of this children's initiative have been produced.
Key topics in the series are: AIDS & Sexuality, Trauma/Abuse, Dis-
abilities. Accompanying print materials for teachers and children in
grade 7 and for parents are currently in development. This is a co-
production between Soul City, the Institute for Health and Develop-
ment Communication, and SABC.

2. Seeds of Peace International Camp - Middle East/USA - this con-
flict-intervention and community building summer programme for Arab
and Israeli youth is located in Maine, USA. In addition to tradi-
tional camp activities, youth meet together every day, under the su-
pervision of professional Israeli, Arab and American facilitators,
for 2-hour "Coexistence Sessions". They co-operate a camp radio sta-
tion throughout the summer and learn computer skills in order to be
able to communicate via the internet after the summer.

3. New Start - Zimbabwe - a Voluntary HIV Counselling and Testing
Network aiming to motivate healthier sexual behaviour and prevent the
spread of AIDS through social marketing. New Start has integrated its
focus on individual customized risk-reduction strategies into exist-
ing health service institutions and has opened sites within these for
counselling with trained staff. Marketing is through TV, radio, print
mass media advertising and drama groups within each community hosting
a New Start center.

4. Educational TV channel - India - this collaboration of the Na-
tional Telecaster Doordarshan and Indira Ghandi National Open Univer-
sity will include programmes for schools, teacher enrichment educa-
tion, open and distance learning, vocational courses, and courses for
disadvantaged sections of the society. Subjects include career guid-
ance, computer education, preparation for competitive exams, edutain-
ment, arts, culture, tourism and other developmental themes, and an
educational current affairs programme. Will telecast 1 interactive hr
daily wherein teachers and experts will clarify for listeners through
phone contact. They are seeking free educational software for use in
programming.

5. ChildInfo - Global - Having determined geography is an important
contextual attribute for social development information systems,
UNICEF is beginning to explore creation of a digital image of the
world accessible through the Internet. The GIS-linked database will
describe a comprehensive information system which will link informa-
tion on development outcomes with information on policy, programme
inputs, programme outputs on evaluations and reviews, and contextual-
ize these within a geographical location.

6. GreenCOM/Mali - Mali - was a project to increase environmental
awareness and to mobilize communities around environmental issues.
Worked to integrate environmental education (EE) and to introduce
participatory teaching methods into school curricula, collaborated
with community radios by training local journalists to develop and
transmit EE messages into local languages, and joined with local NGOs
and community groups on neighbourhood cleanup programmes in Bamako.
Designed and supported by USAID/Bamako, working with Ministry of Ba-
sic Education, Ministry of the Environment, NGOs, media personnel and
public and community school systems.

7. NetAid - Global - UNDP has become the owner of the domain
www.netaid.org. A team led by UNDP's Bureau for Resources and Exter-
nal Affairs, is developing products for the web site, including a
Classified Section linking NGO needs to eradicate poverty with those
able to donate in-kind goods and services. Strategies have been de-
veloped to deal with each of the NetAid registered individuals, NGOs,
and corporations.

8. Reproductive Health Staircase - The concept of Reproductive Health
is accepted everywhere, but is not implemented in many countries be-
cause many people and organizations are confused about the meaning
and content of Reproductive Health. A visual tool can help clarify.
The Staircase effectively visualizes and humanizes specific Reproduc-
tive Health risks experienced by one female throughout her lifetime.

9. South Centre - an intergovernmental organisation of 46 developing
countries of the South. The Centre works to assist in developing
points of view of the South on major policy issues, and to generate
ideas and action-oriented proposals for consideration by the collec-
tivity of South governments, institutions of South-South co-
operation, intergovernmental organizations of the South, and non-
governmental organizations and the community at large.

10. The Multicultural Skyscraper - offers access to links related to
the issues of minority access to the media labour market and minority
portrayal in media programming. 'Portrayal' and 'Education' sections
are most interesting with materials and programmes developed for mu-
licultural education and understanding. Links are grouped together in
topic-specific 'rooms' on floors of the Skyscraper. Offers a Forum to
facilitate exchange of information.

11. "From Now On - The Educational Technology Journal" - a monthly
electronic technology newsletter for technology leaders, thinkers and
teachers. Includes the "Tech Top 10," a list of sites which emphasize
using new technologies as tools to support problem-solving and deci-

12. South Pacific Media in Development - Senior journalism students
of the University of the South Pacific and associated journalists
have compiled a special issue of the newspaper 'Wansolwara' devoted
to the problems of the South Pacific media in development. Examines
the recently lifted media gag in the Solomon Islands, ethics and
training in the region, profiles some of the leading editors, and
looks at press freedom.

13. Film for NGO's fighting FGM - MediaHouse in Cairo, with support
from UNICEF and the Ford Foundation, has finished a short film for
the usage of NGOs fighting Female Genital Mutilation. Film examines
why FGM is practiced, the reactions to it and its significance -
structured as a dialogue from women's perspectives and in women's

GATHERINGS
16. An Electronic Communications (EC) Training Workshop for women
from gender oriented organisations in Ghana was held by ABANTU for
Development on 20-24 Sep. 1999. ABANTU is committed to "enhancing the
capacity of African people, in particular women, to participate in
development and to increase the participation of women in the politi-
cal and economic structures". Workshop provided an understanding of
the historical, cultural, legal and gender implications of EC poli-
cies, along with skills in the use of e-mail and the Internet for re-
search, networking and advocacy.

17. "Communication Capacity Building for NGOs" was the theme of
training supported by UNICEF-Armenia in 1999. 4 local NGOs promoting
children's rights to health, education and protection participated in
the training conducted by the Center for Policy Analysis of the
American University of Armenia. Outcome of the project was develop-
ment, implementation and evaluation of communication campaigns in a
variety of mass media by the 4 NGOs in the areas of breast-feeding
promotion, HIV/AIDS prevention and childhood disability.

18. ICRC sponsored a workshop, "Reporting War and Conflict" at the
Institute for the Advancement of Journalism in Johannesburg, South
Africa, Aug. 10-13. It sought to develop strategies and guidelines
for African journalists involved in reporting local and international
conflicts. Attended by journalists from Nigeria, Tanzania, Swaziland,
Angola, Namibia, South Africa, and Zambia. Article with guidelines
