PROGRAMMES

1. Radio Show for Adolescents - Uganda - launched by Straight Talk
Foundation and broadcast in English on 2 Kampala FM stations, the 22
min. show contains youth interviews, panel discussions, songs, sweep-
ers, advice from experts, a quiz question, interviews with interesting
teens and young adults. Topics include: right age to have sex; girls'
right to say "no"; changing behaviour; conflicts with parents; and
pressures on boys to have sex. Local language shows, to be broadcast
Sept. 1999, will target out-of-school youth who do not speak English
and address issues of HIV prevention.

2. Community Mobilization Project to Eradicate Female Genital Mutila-
tion - Kenya - PATH and Population Action International (PAI) are work-
ing with Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO) to develop commu-
nity-based programmes to reduce the incidence of FGM. District-level
teams are designing and implementing communication programmes to in-
crease awareness of the harmful effects of FGM and to promote alterna-
tive rituals that retain the cultural significance of the practice
while eliminating the physical and emotional trauma.

3. "Rahi Mathwale" - India - a 1 hour radio programme for truck drivers
was broadcast from July 1998 - Jan. 1999 by the All India Radio Bhopal
in association with the Madhya Pradesh AIDS control organisation India.
Broadcast on 19 radio stations, it included Hindi film songs to draw in
the audience, messages on AIDS, live interviews with drivers, inter-
views with the medical community, and interviews with truckers' fami-
lies.

4. The Foundation for Independent Radio Broadcasting (FNR) - Russia -
was set up by BBC MPM in April 1999. Its weekly "Environmentally
Friendly Magazine" is broadcast on national and regional radio stations
and was originally funded by the TACIS Environmental Awareness Pro-
gramme for CIS. It won the Best Radio Programme nomination at the 3rd
"Ecology Russia - 98" Russian Journalism Competition.

5. "Youth Whispers" - Egypt - a 20 min. TV programme on youth issues
has been developed by UNICEF and the Egyptian AIDS Society and broad-
cast weekly on Alexandria's Channel 5. Aims to promote young people to
identify and voice views on issues of concern for them and to increase
community awareness of issues of concern for adolescence and youth and
to make sure they are better informed and better equipped. Includes in-
terviews, live tapings of youth and parent focus groups, and quiz ques-
tions promoting change in behaviour which offer a prize for the correct
answer.

6. Health Information Waystations - Global - With input from WHO, World
Bank, and the International Network for the Availability of Scientific
Publications/ICSU, development has begun on a 5 yr project to upgrade
1,000 existing health information resource centers throughout the de-
veloping world into digitally-enabled Information Waystations (IWs).
Project would supply computer, CD-ROM drive, databases, modem, global
satellite telephone & Internet link, and includes training, mainte-
nance, technical support and development of individual sustainabilility
for each IW.

7. Investments in New Media for Development - USA - The Markle Founda-
tion has given a $50,000 grant for the International Rescue Committee
to develop and implement 1) Child Connect, a software-based programme
to reconnect refugee children with their parents, and 2) Kosovar Family
Finder, using database technology to provide refugees with location in-
formation of displaced persons.

14. South Africa - 2nd National Gender and Media Symposium, focusing on
'Gender Politics and the Media' was held 14 May 1999. Included presen-
tation of a research report on Gender, Elections and the Media, as well
as the official launch of "Redefining Politics", a book which captures
the experiences of a sample of women politicians.

15. International Executive Media & Television Workshop "How to Empower
Yourself with the Media" will be in Amman Jordan 5-7 Dec. 1999. 2nd in
a series designed to empower spokespersons and officials in both pri-
vate and public sectors. Organized by the Center for Development Commu-
nication, in cooperation with The United Nations Staff College in Tu-
rin, Italy, the focus will be on problem based learning - using exam-
ples from participants' own professional experience.

16. The African Women's Media Center (AWMC) has 2 new guides. The "Re-
source Directory for Women Journalists" lists national, regional and
women's media associations in Africa, along with international press
freedom and media groups. Also has training, fellowship, Internet and
career resources. "Women Meeting the Challenge: A Handbook for Media
Leadership" prepares women journalists to take management and decision-
making roles in the media. Handbook compliments training workshops pro-
vided by the AWMC.

21. Call for Information - The International Service for National Agri-
cultural Research (ISNAR) is seeking research results, researchers and
projects in: Agricultural research policy supportive to gender issues
and mechanisms to implement the policy; Gender-related issues in organ-
