PROGRAMMES
"Human Channel of Communication" - India - is an initiative launched by
the Danish Assistance to the National Programme for Control of Blind-
ness (DANPCB) in New Delhi. Volunteers from communities will be trained
to interpret healthcare information for less literate members of the
community, and to provide guidance and support for those members in
gaining access to needed care.

"Sexual Abuse of Children, Child Pornography and Paedophilia on the
Internet" - Global - on 18 & 19 January 1999, 300 child care and child
protection specialists, Internet specialists and service providers, me-
dia practitioners, law enforcement agencies and government representa-
tives met at UNESCO Headquarters/Paris to consider ways of combating
paedophilia and child pornography on the Internet. The resulting action
plan has been posted:

Media Against Conflict (MAC) - Liberia - is a cooperation of newspaper
and radio editors to use media to promote peace, national reconcilia-
tion and stability in Liberia. "Peace and Reconciliation Messages" are
disseminated on radio and in newspapers. MAC will also hold training
workshops and discussions with government officials on cooperation with
the media in the provision and dissemination of information regarding
developments that have the potential to induce/ reduce conflict.

Safe Motherhood Perinatal Programme - Mali - is a new maternal health
programme powered by grassroots participation with a Rapid-Response
component. District hospitals and local health centres are linked by
radio communication and transportation. A community based monitoring
system is augmented by awareness campaigns to improve timely referrals
for health care.

Controlling Population Growth - Global - "Global Intersections" (GI),
an internet-based news digest and information service of Population
Communications International, presents news, features and commentary on
population issues. World population will not stabilize until the middle
of the 21st century, presenting substantial challenges to all nations -
developed and developing. GI studies the social, economic, scientific,
and political factors contributing to spiraling population growth.
