PROGRAMMES

1. Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) - Romania - provides tech-
nical assistance to the Romanian Public Health and Health Management
Association (RPHHMA) to enhance capacity and to implement activities
which impact upon Romanian national health policies and programs. They
are interested in information on experiences with Public Service An-
nouncements, "best practices" on PSAs, and further communications
strategies.

2. End Violence Against Women - Global - Mar. 8, 1999, the United Na-
tions Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) will host a global multimedia
event: "A World Free of Violence Against Women". Live, 2-way video will
link human rights activists in India, Kenya, and Mexico with UN deci-
sion-makers and government, academic, and media representatives in dis-
cussions on critical policy directions and successful actions. Join as
an observer via two options: video conferencing or the World Wide Web.

3. Media House - Egypt - produces professional videos for development.
Using a community based approach, they are developing 10 programmes of
25 minutes each for parents of children who are mentally challenged and
several videos against female genital mutilation.

4. "Knowledge and Information for Development" - Global - The E.D.I. of
the World Bank and the Panos Institute invite you to join an electronic
debate on this theme commencing Feb 1st for 6 weeks. The debate re-
sponds to the growing consensus that the future prosperity and progress
of all countries will depend on how people and governments access, in-
terpret, use and create knowledge and information and how best to seize
the opportunities presented by the information age. This initiative is
designed to foster a frank, focused and productive discussion. If you

5. Television Violence and Its Impact on Children - India - was the
theme of a UNESCO-UNICEF public hearing on Dec. 5 in New Delhi. Based
on a study conducted by the Delhi-based Centre for Advocacy and Re-
search which found that psychopathic behaviour constitutes 26%-50% of
programming on a given day on single channels, with over 50% of the
violence graphic in nature, this was the first time members of the Mum-
bai-based film and television industry were sensitised to impacts of
their programming.

6. Africa Alive! - 8 African countries - an initiative to improve re-
productive health and reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS amongst youth
through synergistic partnerships. 48 representatives from Ghana, Kenya,
Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe met in
Harare, Zimbabwe (November 16-19, 1998) for the first Stakeholders'
Meeting to endorse and plan the initiative.

7. ID21 (Information for Development in the 21st Century) - Global - an
Internet-based system which links development research and researchers
directly to policymakers and development practitioners world-wide. Key
feature is an online collection of short digests of the latest social

17. Hurricane Mitch Postponement - UNAIDS' regional workshop on the de-
velopment of a framework for communications programming for HIV/AIDS in
