Third MIM Pan-African Malaria Conference (2)
--------------------------------------------
Dear Afro-Nets readers,
I have just read, or maybe re-read the information about the Third
MIM Pan-African Malaria Conference..... and I realised that the con-
ference subject areas do not at all cover the issue of economics in
the present African health crisis. At this time in history economics
has become part of the killing system that dominates the health sec-
tor in Africa..... and there are terrible issues that need to be ad-
dressed to get the most benefit from scarce resources.
My cynical view is that the medical scientists are better off ignor-
ing economics, because as soon as economics are included in the plan-
ning and the allocation of resources a lot of "scientific" work will
get terminated, and the allocation of resources between research in
the NORTH and application of existing knowledge in the SOUTH will
change in favor of the SOUTH.
Given the scale of the health crisis in Africa, ignoring the economic
dimension... and by inference the issues related to the allocation of
funds..... is a very serious matter and an abdication of responsibil-
ity by the leadership of the medical profession.
I would welcome feedback..... and collaboration on health econom-
ics.... and collaboration of other aspects of ATCnet's programs to
deploy ICT infrastructure and services in Africa.
Sincerely,
T. Peter Burgess
