Uganda Assured of Global Fund Grant

Uganda's Assistant Commissioner on the National Disease Control Pro-
gram says Uganda is not about to worry about recent claims in the
press that the Global Fund created to disperse funds to fight AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria was running out of money at the end of the
month.
U.N.'s adviser on AIDS in Africa Stephen Lewis was recently quoted
saying that following the rich countries failure to contribute to the
fund, it did not have the resources to prolong and save millions of
lives.
Dr. Alex Opio Uganda's Assistant Commissioner on the National Disease
Control Program and also a member on the Global Fund Implementation
committee said the Fund recently approved the application of US$ 52
million specifically targeted for HIV/AIDS work.
"I cannot guarantee the time when the money will be released but I
can guarantee the Plan." He said.
The committee is currently working on a 6-month implementation plan
for HIV/AIDS intervention on orders from Geneva.
Uganda had initially applied for US$ 98 million US for a 3-year Stra-
tegic and Implementation plan on HIV, Malaria and T.B.
"So far only HIV has been approved," Opio said.
The components of the implementation plan will primarily target the
areas of prevention, care and support and capacity building.
"We want to consolidate on aspects like Information, Education and
communication, the issuing of drugs of STI's, tuberculosis treatment,
Antiretroviral therapy and develop capacity of health workers."
Meanwhile, Uganda is already benefiting from a US$ 40 million grant
through the Multi Country AIDS project, which is now in its 2nd year
of operation.
