We are in the process of recruiting a Director General for our or-
ganisation, African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF). The ad-
vert expires on 30 November 2001.

The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) is an Africa-
based, non-profit, regional health development organisation whose
mission is 'to improve the health of disadvantaged people in Africa'.
AMREF has over five hundred employees throughout Africa, and its
headquarters in Nairobi Kenya, with programmes in Kenya, Tanzania,
Uganda, South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Southern Sudan and Soma-
lia, and is in partnership with 11 international fundraising affili-
ates in North America and Europe.

AMREF, which was founded in 1957, has recently launched its ambitious
new corporate strategy, which focuses on retaining AMREF's position
as a leader in health development across Africa.

AMREF seeks a candidate with a proven record of achievement to fill
the challenging position of Director General based at Headquarters in
Nairobi, Kenya. Reporting to the Board, the Director General will
primarily be responsible for providing strategic direction and man-
agement to ensure delivery of AMREF's agenda by spearheading the suc-
cessful implementation of the new corporate strategy.

The ideal candidate for this position should have:

post-graduate qualification, preferably in Public Health or a related
field; 15 years' experience, of which at least 5 have been in senior
management preferably at an international level; a strong understand-
ing of managing operations in the developing world, preferably within
the health development sector; strong leadership record; demonstrated
capacity to generate and implement new ideas; good communication, ne-
gotiation and people management skills; a good understanding of fi-
nancial management and fundraising; and a good command of English.
