AMREF is the largest health development organization based in
Africa with the mission to improve the health of disadvantaged
people in Africa as a means for them to escape poverty and im-
prove the quality of their life. With headquarters in Kenya,
AMREF has programmes in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, South Af-
rica, Tanzania, and Uganda. Employing 500 staff and with an an-
nual operating budget of around $20 million, AMREF is a partner
with 12 National Offices in North America and Europe that build
awareness and support fundraising. The Foundation is a knowledge
resource for donors and partners and the NEPAD secretariat has
identified AMREF as a partner in its health programme.

The Country Director, AMREF Tanzania will provide leadership and
strategic direction to the country office and field-based staff
in the AMREF Tanzania Country Programme, responsible for country
performance and programme growth. There are important opportuni-
ties to strategically position the Country Programme to support
the health development priorities of Tanzania. The current op-
erating budget for AMREF Tanzania is US$6.6 million having grown
from US$2 million in 2000. As a key member of AMREF's senior
management team with responsibility for representing AMREF in
Tanzania and for supporting management decisions back into the
Country Programme. The position reports to the Director General
and has a critical role to play in the accomplishment of AMREF's
mission and strategy.

Candidates will have a postgraduate degree in public health or a
related subject, at least 8 years progressive experience with at
least 3 years in a senior management position in the developing
world, preferably within the health development sector. They
will have hands-on experience in implementing primary health
care and familiarity with the health and development needs of
disadvantaged people, and a proven record of building effective
partnerships and strategic alliances and experience in the man-
agement of a major programme and/or institutional group.
