The Global Development Network (GDN) invites applications for a total
of nearly US$ 500,000 in travel grants and award money.

Thirty finalists will be invited to present their work at the GDN
2000 conference in Tokyo, Japan, this December. Judges including No-
bel Award-winning economists will select the winners of two US$
125,000 awards and ten smaller prizes. The awards are sponsored by
the Government of Japan, the host for the GDN 2000 conference. The
GDN helps developing countries to discover home-grown solutions to
their most pressing problems. In the past two years it has provided
institutes in developing countries with about US$ 15 million for eco-
nomic policy research.

The awards and prizes include:

The Award for Most Innovative Development Project (US$ 125,000) to
the individual, group or institution whose project holds the greatest
promise for benefiting the poor. The Award for Outstanding Research
on Development (US$ 125,000) to the individual, group or institution
whose research holds the greatest promise for improving understanding
of development. Medals with cash awards of US$ 10,000 and US$ 5,000
for research on each of five topics: escaping poverty, institutional
foundations of a market economy, gender and development, environ-
mental and social sustainability, and science and technology.

Competition for the two main awards is open to all development prac-
titioners and researchers. Competition for the smaller prizes is open
to researchers in developing countries. Initial applications with a
300-word description of the project or research are due by June 30.
