Young People: Implementing a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Approach

An intensive two-week residential course focusing on the sexual and
reproductive health (SRH) needs and rights of young people for health
professionals in the field of family planning and SRH, including
young people themselves.

INTRODUCTION
In recent years interest in, and commitment to, the sexual and repro-
ductive health of young people has grown and a range of approaches
have been developed and adopted. However, facing up to adolescent
sexuality and sexual and reproductive health remains a challenge in
many societies. Drawing on a diversity of international experts and
experience in running SRH courses, IPPF and GTZ have devised a dy-
namic curriculum that covers a rights-based approach to adolescent
sexuality and sexual and reproductive health.
BY THE END OF THE COURSE...
* You will be familiar with techniques and methods of how to work
with, and involve young people in programmes and activities.
* You will have an enhanced understanding of a rights-based approach
to SRH for young people.
* You will have benefited from the professional exchange with fellow
participants, and have had an opportunity to develop strategies col-
laboratively to integrate different elements in a comprehensive SRH
strategy for young people.
* You will have had the opportunity of participating in specialist
workshops on project development, service provision, advocacy and
HIV/AIDS.
* You will have visited a youth-focused SRH and family planning NGO
in London with the chance to interact and have discussions with pro-
ject staff.
ORGANISATION OF THE COURSE
The course is taught in English by experienced inter-disciplinary
specialists from IPPF and GTZ, as well as faculty members from aca-
demic institutions and international experts. Tuition comprises a
range of methods from plenary presentation and discussions to small
group exercises, peer-learning and role plays. Participants will be
encourage to take an active role by drawing on their experiences and
sharing field initiatives. A core team of facilitators will be on
hand to direct the course. A certificate of attendance is awarded at
the end of the course.
PARTICIPANTS AND FEES
The course is designed for between 20-25 professionals who work
hands-on in programme and activities for adolescent sexual and repro-
ductive health, including young people themselves. For example those
involved in the provision of youth-friendly services, peer education
programmes, youth leaders and those that affect policy making. Par-
ticipants must be fluent in English. The fees are �2,300 which covers
tuition, extensive course materials, accommodation, breakfast, lunch
and some dinners. Accommodation is single room only, with bathroom
and kitchen facilities in Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, UK. The
round trip airfare and train/coach fare to and from Cambridge, insur-
ance, visas and incidental expenses are the responsibility of par-
ticipants. Participants are advised to seek funding from local agen-
cies such as the British Council, WHO, UNFPA and other do-
nors/sources. There may be the possibility of some financial assis-
tance available for young people under the age of 25 who are working
in youth-focused programmes. Any such potential applicants should

ORGANIZERS
IPPF
The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) the world�s
largest voluntary organization working through more than 150 Family
Planning Associations worldwide and in at least 180 countries for
the sexual and reproductive health, choices and rights of women, men
and young people. IPPF has taken a forward-looking and progressive
approach to the Federation�s work with young people to meet their
sexual and reproductive health needs and rights. This includes young
people�s participation in the design and implementation of pro-
grammes, as well as young people forming part of the Federation�s
highest policy-making body. IPPF�s commitment to youth is clearly
outlined in the Federation�s Youth Policy and Youth Manifesto which
were designed by young people from around the world.
GTZ
The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) is an
executive agency based in Germany. It is commissioned by the German
Government to contribute its know-how and expertise to the planning
and implementation of technical co-operation projects which are car-
ried out in collaboration with organizations in partner countries.
The main services offered by GTZ are in the areas of project plan-
ning, monitoring and evaluation; technical advisory services; commu-
nity and needs-orientated approaches. Youth is an increasingly impor-
tant component of GTZ's health and population programmes.
VENUE
Cambridge is a historic university town built around the river Cam.
It is approximately 50 miles from London and there are good train
links from London, as well as direct coach links from Gatwick, Heath-
row and Stansted airports. Noted for its friendly and relaxed atmos-
phere, the Victorian buildings which comprise Lucy Cavendish College
are set in nearly three acres of tree-lined gardens and ten minutes
walk from the centre of Cambridge.
Due to the volume of applications received for this course, partici-
pants are asked to complete the application on this brochure and re-
turn it by 31 May 2003 to the address below. A non-refundable deposit
of �500 and two passport-sized photographs are also required by this
date to ensure that a place on the course is held. This deposit will
be off-set against the full course fees due by 1 August 2003. Appli-
cations will close as soon as all the places are allocated. In addi-
tion, please include with this application form a statement of 200
words on a separate piece of paper explaining why you wish to take
this course and how it will be relevant to your professional work and
development.
