Youth Initiative / TakingItGlobal Conference- Capacity Building
and Advocacy as a Way Forward
Location: Millennium Hall at the Chiromo Campus (University of
Nairobi). Time: 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
Event Details:
This conference is meant to gather individuals to discuss and im-
plement plans of action with regard to capacity building and ad-
vocacy within the African Regional Youth Initiative (ARYI) and
TakingItGlobal (TIG) networks. These networks are comprised of
youth and community-based organizations involved in HIV/AIDS, de-
velopment and social issues at the community and national levels.
This conference is open to all (not only members of ARYI and TIG)
and is free of charge. Participants are encouraged to bring mate-
rials from their organizations to discuss with other participants
(although space will be made for participants to verbally share
information about their organizational activities with others).
The overall aim of the conference is to
(1) provide a forum for participants to share information about
their organizations and programmes being implemented in Africa,
(2) enhance the capacity of organizations to deliver quality sup-
port programmes or services, and
(3) develop an advocacy plan for the next year regarding access
to HIV/AIDS and malaria drugs, sexual and reproductive health and
rights, and stigma and discrimination. Developing a joint advo-
cacy action plan for December 1 (World AIDS Day) will be of cen-
tral focus.
This conference will also serve to launch the ARYI Advocacy Com-
mittee that will work at the regional level to coordinate advo-
cacy campaigns in Africa.
At the end of the conference, key issue areas regarding HIV/AIDS
in Africa will be identified. In addition, working groups will be
formed that address these key issues (i.e. a working group on or-
phans and vulnerable children). These working groups will be re-
sponsible for forming specific strategies addressing their issue.
Implementation of the strategies will be done with the support of
the ARYI and TIG networks.
