[e-drug] 5th, updated WHO prequalification list

E-DRUG: 5th, updated WHO prequalification list
---------------------------------------------

dear E-druggers,

On the WHO website:

http://www.who.int/medicines/organization/qsm/activities/pilotproc/pilotpro
c.shtml
[repair URL!]

you can download the 5th version of the WHO prequalified drugs (updated 28
Feb 2003)

The list now includes 13 generic ARVs from 3 companies (Cipla, Ranbaxy and
Combino Pharm SL), and covers the following dosage forms:

Lamivudine 150mg tab
Lamivudine 50mg/5ml solution
Lamivudine + Zidovudine 150/300mg tab
Nevirapine 200mg tab
Zidovudine 300mg tab
Zidovudine 100mg caps
Zidovudine 250mg caps

This means that a first-line regimen (ZDV/LMV/NVP) is now possible with
WHO-prequalified generic ARVs.

The decision of the Global Fund not to recognize national decisions by Drug
Regulatory Authorities after end 2004, but only to rely on WHO prequalified
drugs or on DRA decisions from ICH or PICS countries, means that this WHO
list will soon become extremely important!
