A study was conducted for the first time in out-patient care of three zonal
hospitals (Tertiary Level) situated in three regions of Nepal.
A total of 117 prescriptions from each facility were collected. WHO
quantitative indicators were applied. Drugs prescribed from National List of
Essential Drugs was less than 50% in all three hospitals. Drugs prescribing by
Generic was less than 8%. Though average number of drugs per encounter was less
than 3, encounter receiving antibiotics was more than 40% and encounter
receiving injections was more than 6% in study hospitals. Vitamins were used in
up to 11% of encounters. None of the drug was dispensed from health
institutions.
