The Department of Pharmacy, Gertrude's Children's Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya together with Dr. David Woods, Consultant Clinical Pharmacist, New Zealand will conduct a regional training course on Advances in Pharmaceutical Care focusing on Paediatric Extemporaneous Formulations and Medication Safety, 26th to 30th September 2011 at The Professional Training Centre, Gertrude's Children's Hospital.

The training is open to physicians, pharmacy personnel in hospital or community settings, nurses, interested health officials in hospitals, ministries of health, university or private organizations, candidates with experience in paediatrics or who wish to expand their knowledge in paediatric extemporaneous formulations and medication safety.

The following areas will be covered:
Current best practice in the compounding of paediatric extemporaneous formulations and
medication safety aspects.
Extemporaneous preparations
Risk management; Quality management; Personnel and Training; Premises and equipment; Documentation; Preparation;
Formulation & Stability; Quality control; Complaints, product recalls and adverse events; Quality Assessment; Audit & Monitoring; Extemporaneous formulary and monographs.

Medication safety
Introduction to medication safety; Health care providers' experiences - fatal medication errors;

Understanding the causes of medication errors - I & 11;
Preventing medication errors - a shared responsibility;
Preventing medication errors: specific medications, patients and conditions; Reducing risks and creating a just culture of safety.

Design and Methods
The course will be conducted in English and will be highly participatory consisting of presentations, discussions, small group activities and field visits. The training will be based on materials developed collaboratively by Dr. David Woods,
New Zealand and the Chief Pharmacist, Gertrude's Children's Hospital.

Facilitators
A core team of experts in pharmacy practice from New Zealand and Kenya will serve as course facilitators. They include- Dr. David Woods, Dr Robert Nyarango, head of out-patient services and coordinator of clinical governance at Gertrude's Children's Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya,
Dr. Berlinda Nganga, head of pharmacy services and a senior clinical pharmacist at Gertrude's Children's Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya. S

Fees and Registration
Early bird course fees (Payment prior to 1st August 2011): $ 300
Standard Course fees (From 15th August 2011): $ 350
Course fees include attendance to the course, copy of the course material, lunch and light refreshments on all the 5 days.
Please note the course fees do not include: Flights or accommodation. Payment details will be ernailed to you once the registration form is completed.
A course cocktail is planned for Thursday 29th September 2011 evening for all
participants. The fee for this cocktail is included in the registration fee.

Participants should plan to arrive in Nairobi on Sunday 25th September 2011 and are expected to bring sufficient money for incidental expenses like laundry, postage, phone calls, etc. Travel and health insurance are the responsibility of the participant / sponsoring organization.

Cancellation Policy
Full refund will be given for any cancellation before 15th August 2011 ($ 50 will be retained for administration costs).
Cancellations upto 31st August will incur a 50% charge on the initial fees paid. No refund will be given after the 1st of September 2011.
