E-drug: ARVs on EDL (cont)

Friends,
India's EDL does not include ARV drugs. In fact the country's public funded
health system does not offer ARV drugs. This would appear strange to people
given the fact that Indian cos. are offering ARVs to other countries at
prices that are possibly the lowest in the world. But prospective buyers do
not include the country's public health system. This has to do with the fact
that India's health system is one of the most privatised in the world.
Public funding is just 0.9% of GDP (down from 1.3% a decade back) and as
percentage of total health expenditure it is just 16%!
