E-drug: BNF Online
---------------------------------------------
Dear e-drug readers,
In view of the correspondence now going on via the e-drug network on the
subject of advertising in formularies, the information that the British
National Formulary is now available online may be of interest. The BNF is
a comprehensive formulary, and although it does not replace national
formularies tailored to the specific requirements of developing countries,
it is a useful source of reliable information - many national formularies
are in fact modelled on it. Even where national formularies exist, it is
not always possible to up-date them sufficiently frequently, so another
source of information may be necessary.
The Essential Drugs Project, along with other agencies, have with great
difficulty supplied copies of the BNF to organisations with key drug
information responsibilities in the past, and there is still a low cost
print version available from Teaching Aids at Low Cost (though the
distribution has recently been drastically restricted).
Therefore the decision to make the BNF available through the internet will
be welcome news to many. The correct address for the BNF is:
I have found this easy to use. However, I believe variants such as
www.bnf.org and www.bnf.org.uk also work.
Once you have opened the home page, you need to click the first bar on the
menu (BNF 39 - on a pinkish background).
best wishes,
Philippa Saunders.
