E-DRUG: Books on Pills (9)
-----------------------------------------------------

An excellent resource is Jillian Clare Cohen, Udo Schuklenk and Patricia
Illingsworth, The Power of Pills: Social, Ethical and Legal Issues in Drug
Development, Marketing, and Pricing (London, Pluto Press, 2006).

E-DRUG: Books on Pills (10)
-------------------------------------------

[Thanks Donald. Deleted one already mentioned. I have almost compiled the list we have and will share it in the next few days. BS]

Apologies for being tardy, but I'd like to suggest a few important
contributions.

Ivan Illich in Medical Nemesis (Calder & Boyar 1975) was so incisive about
so much concerning modern medicines and medicalization, even if one does not
agree with his radical solution.

John Abraham, in Science, Politics and the Pharmaceutical Industry
(Routledge 1995) provides rare, detailed accounts of how new medicines get
negotiated between industry reps and the FDA. Both come off looking badly.

Govin Permanand, in EU Pharmaceutical Regulation (Manchester University
Press 2006) has produced an authoritative, insightful, and well-researched
contribution.

If any of you are in the Amsterdam-Hague area, it would be good to get more
acquainted. I have new publications on AMCs as an impractical and ethical
troubling way to finance vaccines for the poor, on pricing medicines, and on
the harms of Free Trade Agreements.

E-DRUG: Creating off-label uses?
---------------------------------------------------

We need to understand more deeply how off-label uses of drugs develop. It
would greatly help if you know studies or reports or accounts on the
construction of off-label uses, the uses of evidence or <evidence,< the role
of clinical networks, financial inducements, and other aspects.

With thanks,

Donald
