E-DRUG: Call for Papers “Access to Medicines, Pricing and Generics”
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Call for Papers- Special Issue of Southern Med Review on “Access to Medicines, Medicine Pricing and Generic Drugs”
One third of the world’s population lacks adequate access to medicines. Amongst others poor availability and high prices are the major barriers to access to medicines especially in developing countries.
In the current scenario where there is an increasing emphasis on “advanced pharmacy services”, it is important that we also place attention on the issues which challenge the very basis of a healthcare system. Investigating issues related to medicine pricing, access to medicines and generics not only uncovers the empirical data (on these issues) but it also helps to explore many related core pharmaceutical policy problems. Furthermore, “Quality use of Medicines” can only be promoted, if the drugs are available and within the reach of the masses. Promotion of generic drugs also needs attention as in 2006, it was estimated that out of the US$650 billion global pharmaceutical market, less than 10 % constitute generic drugs.
Though studies related to pricing, access to medicines and generic medicines do appear in various journals, a special issue covering all these topics is much needed at this time and would be helpful to nurture pharmaceutical policy debate. Therefore, Southern Med Review - a journal which has a development focus would like to ensure a quality publication in this area.
Contributions are welcomed across the following areas:
• Access to medicines and the role of different stakeholders (NGOs, Universities, Academia, Governments, Pharmaceutical Industry, Drug Regulatory Authorities)
• Access to medicines models in developed world and their relevance (if there is any) to developing countries
• Research papers, commentaries based on WHO/HAI medicine pricing surveys
• Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and Access to Medicines
• Promotion of generic drugs and consumers, pharmacists, physicians’ role
• Access to medicines and minority groups in developed countries
• Political economy of pharmaceutical industry and access to medicines
