E-DRUG: Changing HIV Treatment Guidelines in South Africa
----------------------------------------------------
Dear fellow E-druggers,
Changing HIV Treatment Guidelines: 3rd Access to Healthcare in Africa Conference
On 1 April 2010, South Africa adopted new clinical management guidelines
for ART regimens in the world's largest antiretroviral programme. The
main change is to start patients on Tenofovir-containing regimens, in
place of those containing Stavudine. The implications of the new
approach are huge. Not only will new regimens be introduced, but
government also aims to double the number of patients on antiretroviral
therapy in the next year, at a time when resources are being challenged
and even reduced in some contexts. Similar situations will occur across
other countries in the region.
In order to address these situations, you are invited to attend the 3rd
consecutive Access to Healthcare in Africa Conference on 06 and 07
October 2010 in Johannesburg, South Africa. This year's main thrust of
the symposium will be the challenges to Access, Quality and Care in
times of Changing Treatment Guidelines.
This international forum will enable healthcare professionals from
various disciplines who are involved in HIV and AIDS, TB and Malaria
treatment programmes, to share insights and learn from experiences
regarding challenges posed to treatment, primary level initiation,
quality of medicines, procurement and the effectiveness of the supply
chain.
International panel speakers will briefly introduce topics, followed by
ample time for interactive discussions and Q&A sessions. The two day
conference programme will center around the following three main themes:
1. The new ARV guidelines and other challenges to the treatment of HIV
patients
2. Meeting the challenges of TB and Malaria
3. The implications of the new guidelines and new targets for Supply
Chain Management
