Seeking Solutions: Developing new treatments and improving access for
poor people
Preceding the drafting of its report, the Commission wishes to provide
stakeholders and interested parties with an opportunity to share their
views and ideas. It is therefore organizing an "Open Forum" on 1st June
2005 with the purpose of stimulating an open discussion on specific
themes oriented to finding practical solutions to the development of new
treatments and better access to treatments in developing countries.
This event comes in the middle of an important week for CIPIH. A
workshop on background studies will have just concluded, and there will
be a two day meeting of the Commission right after the Open Forum.
Therefore, this event is well situated to broaden the debate and aid the
Commission as it draws together the different threads of research,
analysis and public and expert input it has received so far.
The major themes that will be discussed in this forum are the following:
* What are the current trends in terms of the global burden of disease
and how should they inform R&D and financing priorities?
* How does the implementation of TRIPS affect R&D and access and how
might national patent systems need to change?
* Are there new ideas to stimulate innovation and promote access, and to
improve the process of R&D for therapeutics?
* How best can systems in developing countries be adapted to support
innovation on neglected diseases?
A group of panellists will be assembled for each session, who will
present their own views. However, plenty of time will be allowed for
open discussion of each theme by all participants. English and French
translation will be made available at this event.
