E-DRUG: Cloxacillin/flucloxacillin in place of nafcillin inj
-----------------------------------------------
Dear E-druggers,
We are going to review our EML very soon and I would suggest for the removal of Nafcillin injection from the list because of the following reasons:
1. very expensive
2. recently, it was quite difficult to source from the markets.
I've just recently joined this hospital and this is my first experience with Nafcillin injection. Because of its' high usage rate, this item chews up a major portion of our budget.
Replacing Nafcillin with Cloxacillin inj will be an enormous task for me, since it has been part of the EML and our doctors are quite comfortable with it for more than a decade now.
I would be more appreciative to hear experiences with these two items, and
opinions on the substitution.
[The moderator cannot see that this is an essential antibiotic at all. It is similar to flucloxacillin, cloxacillin and dicloxacillin. It is not on the market as a registered product in the UK, US, Canada, Australia etc. In fact Martindale (the extra Pharmacopoeiae) does not list any product from any country so probably it is not available in registered products in most countries. This should be enough information to discourage use. It never stops to surprise me why some countries insist on continuing useless expensive products.]
Thank you.
