[e-drug] Conditions maritime transport?

E-DRUG: Conditions maritime transport?
-------------------------------

Dear E-drug,

Could anyone refer me to studies that have been done to measure or
evaluate the effect of international maritime transport of medicines on
the stability and quality of the transported medicines. The containers
with medicines may spend 3 months or longer on a ship, in a harbour and
on a truck in varying conditions, often with temperatures that may be
well over 25 or 30 degrees Celcius for extended periods.

Is anyone aware of any studies done to measure or quantify the potential
effects on the efficacy of the transported medicines or does anyone have
any experiences on this issue they would not mind sharing?

Looking forward to your reactions,

Kind regards, Ed

As well as the Hogerzeil 1992 paper, I seem to recall that the following
papers mention issues of drug quality in transport:

Hogerzeil, H., V., De Goeje, M., J., Abu Reid, I., O. (1991), 'Stability
of essential drugs in Sudan', The Lancet 338:754-755

Okeke, I., N., Lamikanra, A., Edelman, R. (1999), 'Socioeconomic and
Behavioral Factors Leading to Acquired Bacterial Resistance to
Antibiotics in Developing Countries', Emerging Infectious Diseases
(January - February) 5 (1): 18-27

Nazerali, H., Muchemwa, T., Hogerzeil, H., V. (1996), 'Stability of
Essential Drugs in Tropical Climates: Zimbabwe', EDM Research Series
Number 13, World Health Organization

Hope this helps,
