Event Details of Training Course on Drug and Therapeutic Committees
23rd September- 2nd October 2002, Mumbai, India
The Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs WHO-India
Essential Drugs Programme, New Delhi; Management Sciences for
Health-Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus, Washington DC and the
World Health Organization, Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy, Geneva
are pleased to announce an International Training Course on Drugs and
Therapeutic Committees from 23rd Sept. to 2nd October.
The 10 day course will be hosted by the Department of Clinical
Pharmacology, BYL Nair Charitable Hospital, Mumbai 400 008.
Who should attend?
Physicians, pharmacists, and health officials in hospitals, ministries
of health, universities or private organizations interested in
promoting rational use of drugs through Drug and Therapeutic Committees
(DTCs), and who will be in a position to provide training and technical
assistance to other DTCs.
Candidates from Asia with some experience of drug and therapeutic
committees, and who wish to expand their knowledge, are preferred.
Objectives
The training course will focus on the role of the drug and therapeutic
committee and the practical approaches available in promoting more
rational use of drugs. Key features include formulary management,
standard treatment guidelines, essential drug list, indicators of drug
use, interventions to change inappropriate drug use, infection control
and the practical aspects of running a DTC.
Design
The training course will be conducted in English and will consist of
presentations, discussions, group activities, and field visits. The
training course is highly participatory, and the exchange of
experiences and ideas among participants adds depth to the learning
process. The course materials are based on those developed by the MSH
in collaboration with WHO and participants will be exposed to a wide
range of international experiences and materials.

Faculty
A team of experts from WHO, MSH, DSPRUD and BYL Nair Hospital and
TN Medical College, Mumbai. The trainers include:
1.Dr. Kathleen Holloway, medical officer in the Department
of Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy, WHO Geneva, with 20 years
clinical and public health experience in the UK, Burma, India, Nepal,
focusing in the area of promoting rational use of drugs.
2.Dr. John Chalker, is a medical doctor working with Management
Sciences of Health as the technical program coordinator for the
Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus program. He has fifteen years
of experience of designing, implementing and managing health
development projects at local, regional and national level in countries
in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He has worked with key academic
institutions in designing and coordinating research on ways of
improving rational drug use.
3. Mr. Terry Green has worked for MSH for 2 years as Team Leader for
the Anti-microbial Resistance program and has been the facilitator on
five previous DTC courses. He wrote and developed a good part of the
course material. Previously he served as a long-term advisor in the
republic of Palau. Mr. Green has more than 20 years of experience as a
clinical pharmacist for the U.S. Public Health Service.
4. Dr. Ranjit Roy Chaudhury is the President of the Delhi Society for
Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs as well as the Coordinator of the
WHO-India Essential Drugs Programme. He holds the UNESCO Chair for
Rational Use of Drugs at the Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok.
5. Dr. Sharadini Dahanukar, Dean, BYL Nair Hospital was programme
director for the International Drug Policy Issues Course held in Mumbai
in 1999. She is also Deputy Coordinator (South) of the WHO-India
Essential Drugs Programme.
6. Dr. Urmila Thatte is a Clinical Pharmacologist with experience in
research and teaching on rational drug use. She currently looks after
the Clinical Pharmacology Department of BYL Nair Hospital and is the
Joint Coordinator of the Maharashtra Unit of the WHO-India Essential
Drugs Programme.
7. Dr. Usha Gupta is Professor of Pharmacology at the Maulana
Azad Medical College, New Delhi and has 20 years experience in
teaching clinical pharmacology to medical students. She is the Deputy
Coordinator (North) of the WHO-India Essential Drugs Programme and is
also the Secretary of the Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use
of Drugs.
Fees and Application
The course fee is US $1250 and covers tuition, training course
materials, shared accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Those
unwilling to share accommodation must be prepared to pay an extra
$21/night for single rooms. Participants should plan to bring
sufficient money for incidental expenses like laundry, postage, phone
calls, and etc. Travel and health insurance are the responsibility of
the sponsoring organization. No separate per diem will be given
Limited sponsorships are available for participants and selection will
be based on previous experience, interest in promoting rational use of
drugs through the DTC as well as ability to implement such programmes
in their own environment.
Deadline for application
Applications and fees are due no later than July 31st 2002. Due to
limited places available (20 national and 20 international
participants), early applications are encouraged.
Demand drafts (DD) may be made in favor of "DTC Course, BYL Nair
