International Training Course on
DRUG AND THERAPEUTICS COMMITTEES
Amman-Jordan September 2-11, 2002

This course will be hosted by the faculty of medicine at Jordan
University of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Rational
Pharmaceutical Management Plus (RPM Plus) Program of Management Sciences
for Health (MSH), the Departments of Essential Drugs and Medicines
Policy of WHO Geneva and Essential Drugs and Biologicals in the Eastern
Mediterranean Regional Office in Egypt. The course is designed for
physicians, pharmacists, and health officials in hospitals, ministries
of health, universities or private organizations. Those who are
interested in improving formulary management and rational use of drugs
through drug and therapeutic committee (DTCs), and who will be in a
position to provide training and technical assistance to other DTCs, are
invited to apply. Candidates with some experience in drug and
therapeutics committees, and those who wish to expand their knowledge of
drug management, are preferred.

Objectives
The training course will focus on the role of the drug and therapeutic
committee and the practical approaches available in promoting more
rational use of drugs. Key features include: formulary management,
standard treatment guidelines, essential drug list, indicators of drug
use, interventions to change inappropriate drug use and the practical
aspects of running a DTC.

Design
The training course will be conducted in English and will consist of
presentations, discussions, group activities, and field visits. The
training course is highly participatory, and the exchange of experiences
and ideas among participants adds depth to the learning process.
Training course materials are based on those developed by the MSH in
collaboration with WHO. The participants will be exposed to a wide range
of international experiences and materials. Needless to mention an
unforgettable trip to Petra.

Fees and Application
The course fee of USD 1200 is possible due to a subsidy from the
Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus program of Management Sciences
for Health. The fee of $1200 covers tuition, training course materials,
shared accommodation, lunch and breakfast. Those unwilling to share
accommodation must be prepared to pay an extra $30/night for single
rooms. Participants will be provided with $20 per day to cover expenses
for regular dinners that will not be provided by the organizers.
Participants should plan to bring sufficient money for incidental
expenses like laundry, postage, phone calls, and etc. Airfare and health
insurance are the responsibility of the sponsoring organization.

Deadline for application
Applications and fees are due no later than July 20, 2002. Due to
limited places available (Maximum of 30 international participants),
applicants are encouraged to apply earlier. Bankdraft should be made

There is limited funding available for sponsoring some participates for
the course. Applications should be sent to local or regional WHO offices
or to MS. (applications to MSH should be sent to (fabolade@msh.org).
Faculty
A team of experts from MSH, WHO and Jordan University of Science and
Technology. The trainers include:

1. Dr.Kathy Holloway, medical officer in the Department of Essential
Drug and Medicines Policy, WHO Geneva, with 20 years clinical public
health experience in the UK, Burma, India, Nepal, Latterly focusing in
the promoting rational use of drugs.

2. Mr. Terry Green is a Senior Program Associate with MSH where he is
the team leader for the Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus
Antimicrobial Resistance activities. This work includes the development
and implementation of training materials for international Drug and
Therapeutics Committee training courses. He has facilitated courses in
Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Kenya and Nepal. He has 20 years of
experience in public health pharmaceutical programs.

3. Dr. John Chalker, is a medical doctor working with Management
Sciences of Health as the global program coordinator for the Rational
Pharmaceutical Management Plus program. He has thirteen years of
experience of designing, implementing, and managing health development
projects at local, regional, and national level in countries in Asia,
Africa, and the Middle East. He has worked with key academic
institutions in designing and coordinating research on ways of improving
rational drug use.

4. Professor Hakam Al-Hadidi is a physician, clinical pharmacologist and
the dean of scientific research at Jordan University of Science and
Technology. He has fifteen years of experience in research and teaching
on drug management and rational use of drugs and drug information. He
serves on different committees on drug policy at the Ministry of
Health-Jordan. He is a member of the higher committee of drug and
pharmacy. He is the chairman of the WHO-collaborative Pharmacovigilance
center, STG and bioavailability committee. He conducted national and
international workshops on drug safety and rational use of drugs.

5. Dr. Sameer Otoom is a physician and a clinical pharmacologist at the
faculty of Medicine at Jordan University of Science and Technology. He
is currently an active member on various committees on drug
registration, national formulary, and rational use of drugs at the
Ministry of Health. He is a member of the Pharmacovigilance center, CINP
and the STG national team. He has a long experience in teaching
rationale use of drugs, drug safety and clinical research management
with publications in this field.
