E-DRUG: Engagement of the private pharmaceutical sector in TB control: rhetoric or reality?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear colleagues,

The USAID SIAPS program
<http://siapsprogram.org/>
implemented by Management Sciences for Health published research in the
Journal of Pharmaceutical Policy and Practice
entitled "Engagement of the private pharmaceutical sector in TB control: rhetoric or reality?"

https://joppp.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40545-016-0093-3

The paper draws upon the efforts made by TB programs with broader
implications for antimicrobial resistance and pharmaceutical policy. The
paper highlights two key messages:

 - Although private pharmacies are willing and able to contribute to TB
control efforts, interventions have not scaled adequately. Coverage ranged
from less than 5% to 9% of the universe of private pharmacies, which is
unlikely to have broader public health impact (figure 1 in paper)

 - The institutional roles of national medicines regulatory authorities,
national pharmacy associations, private pharmacy and wholesaler
associations and pharmacy schools need to be better utilized in the
collective fight against antimicrobial resistance (figure 2 in paper)

Though the paper focuses on TB, the takeaway messages have implications for
malaria, reproductive health, family planning, public health and for those
debating the issue of scale (coverage) with that of effective regulation
and incentives.
