E-drug: Essential drugs in village setting (cont)
---------------------------------------------
E-drug subscribers might like to know that another former VSO
(Voluntary Service Overseas) volunteer, Georgina Stock, produced a
useful set of training newsletters over several years.

The newsletters are called 'Practical Pharmacy', and the series
covers dispensing, essential drugs, patient information, rational
prescribing, drug calculations, stock control and other vital topics.
A cover note provides suggestions for how the resource might be used
in training and day-to-day practice.

ECHO International Health Services has agreed to distribute
'Practical Pharmacy', at least while stocks of the complete set last.
ECHO can be contacted by e-mail on:

  manjitk@echohealth.org.uk, or cs@echohealth.org.uk

Regarding a suitable list of essential drugs for primary health care,
perhaps WHO colleagues could comment on the possibility of using the
WHO 'New Emergency Health Kit' as a model: this includes a limited
list of drugs and supplies.

best wishes,

Philippa Saunders.

[Philippa, I think 'New Emergency Health Kit' is an excellent idea
for starting a program. It includes a list of very appropriate drugs
along with the treatment guidelines and assistance for training
health workers at both the basic and referral levels of care. The
Kit contains essential drugs for 10,000 people for 3 months and
includes 10 separate Basic Kits for 1000 cases each, for use by
community health workers together with one referral kit. The total
kit costs around US$ 8000 and is available as far as I know from IDA
<info@ida.nl> and UNIPAC. BS]
