E-drug: First Asian course on problem-based pharmacotherapy

PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT
FIRST ASIAN COURSE ON PROBLEM-BASED PHARMACOTHERAPY
The first Asian training course on problem-based pharmacotherapy teaching
will be held from Oct 6th-14th 1999 (inclusive) in Manila, Philippines.
It is being organised jointly by members of the medical faculty of the
University of Santo Tomo, Metro Manila and the WHO Collaborating Centre for
teaching and training in rational pharmacotherapy at the Faculty of Medicine
and Health Sciences, University of Newcastle, Australia. The course is being
organised in collaboration with the WHO EDM department.
COURSE OBJECTIVES AND CONTENT.
The course is designed primarily for teachers of pharmacotherapy who are
working in undergraduate or post-graduate settings -- medical schools,
pharmacy schools, teaching hospitals etc. The course aims to provide
practical instruction in, and experience of, a problem-based approach to
pharmacotherapy teaching based on the method of the WHO "Guide to Good
Prescribing" manual.
Participants will:
-experience the problem-based approach to pharmacotherapy teaching
-learn to act as facilitators of small-group, problem-based learning in
practical pharmacotherapy
-become familiar with modern educational strategies available for course
development, student assessment, and course and tutor evaluation.
-develop their own targets and objectives for introducing the problem-based
approach to pharmacotherapy teaching in their local context
VENUE
The course will be held at a conference centre in or close to
Metro Manila. Details will be given in the next announcement.
FACULTY
Teaching faculty will include Prof. Tan Alora, Dean of the Medical
School, University of Santo Tomo, Manila , Prof. Tony Smith, and
other staff from the WHO Collaborating Center, Newcastle, Australia
and teachers from several Philippines medical schools who are familiar
with pharmacotherapy teaching. Staff from the WHO EDM department
staff will also participate.
NUMBERS
To achieve the maximum opportunities for small group work and
interactive learning the course will be limited to 30 participants.
If demand exceeds available places,preference will be given to
teachers working in the Asia-Pacific region.
LANGUAGE
The working language of the course will be English.
FEES
Fees include all tuition,materials,accommodation and food for the
9 days( 8 working days, Sunday Oct 10th will be a rest day) of the
course. The overall fee will be US$ 2500 per person. Travel costs to
and from Manila are not included. Applicants would need to find their
own financial sponsors.
APPLICATIONS
Applications are invited from teachers of undergraduate or
postgraduate health professionals who would like to explore a
problem-based approach to rational pharmacotherapy.
