[e-drug] Fluoroquinolones in anti-microbial therapy

E-DRUG: Fluoroquinolones in anti-microbial therapy
--------------------------------------------------

Fellow e-druggers,

In which specific infections will it be advisable not
to recommend ciprofloxacin as a therapeutic group
alternative to ofloxacin and pefloxacin?

Are there distinct clinical situations in which anyone
of these can be considered as having a superior
advantage over the others?

I learnt that ciprofloxacin is not the drug of first
choice in pneumococcal pneumonia, and that, although
it is licensed for skin and soft tissue infections,
there is a high incidence of staphylococcal
resistance.

Are they equally effective in non-gonococcal
urethritis and cervicitis?

I find it necessary to make these enquiries because
their prescription patterns in my hospital,
particularly among some primary care physicians appear
to be greatly influenced by pharmaceutical company
representatives promotional efforts, and
ciprofloxacin is often times more readily available in
the hospital pharmacy than the others.

Thank you for usual assistance.

Best regards.

Sincerely,
