E-DRUG: Generic substitution policy

E-drug: Generic substitution policy
-----------------------------------

Dear colleague,

In Thailand, we started gradually generic substitution policy in public
hospitals, especially for those who can't pay the bill. For those who
can pay the bill, generic will be also substituted unless prescriber
underline the name of drug, that pharmacists are not allowed to
substitute.

We found that prescribers put the brand name as it's quite difficult to
write down on generic name for some combinations. Generic substitution
policy will save quite substantial amount of scarce health care
resources. I wonder there is any studies on cost savings from this
policy. I agree with our colleage from Denmark on the listing.
