Dear E-Drug Participants,
Health Action International (HAI) recently published "A Guide to NGO
Essential Drugs Policies". This discussion paper was drawn up due to
the fact that while many NGOs advocate the adoption of essential drugs
policies by national governments, few have actually implemented the
same policies to guide their own activities. The Guide explains why
following an essential drugs policy is important and then sets out a
step-by-step approach to help NGOs develop such a policy.
Some of the topics covered include assessing needs, selecting drugs, financing
a sustainable drug supply and controlling drug donations. These issues
were chosen based upon the results of a survey HAI-Europe conducted
among European, development aid NGOs. While HAI coordinated the
project, many NGOs have devoted time and energy to the writing of
the text.
The Guide also includes a listing of helpful addresses where NGOs can
receive more information about essential drugs and a summary of key
resources that provide information on various aspects of rational
drug use.
HAI sees this document as the first step in a process to help NGOs
find ways to use the essential drugs concept within their own
organisation and not just within their advocacy work.
E-Drug subscribers interested in receiving a copy of the Guide, can
