E-DRUG: How can we promote rational use of medicines? (12)
-------------------------------------------------

Dear e-druggers,

A global effort in promoting the rational use of medicines requires that
WHO be more effective. In order for WHO to be more effective, an
enabling resolution must be passed at the World Health Assembly in May
2007. In order for the proposed resolution to be passed, member states
must support the resolution. To convince uncommitted member states, NGOs
and others with influence need to present a compelling and
incontrovertible argument for the resolution.

Apparently a controversial section of the the proposed resolution is:

'to ensure national coordination of the use of medicines, where possible
by establishing a mandated multidisciplinary national body, involving
civil society, to monitor medicine use, and to promote and coordinate
the implementation of a national programme for the rational use of
medicines as part of a medicines policy congruent with national health
structures and available resources;'

In my opinion, a nationally coordinated multidisciplinary approach is
key in achieving significant improvement and this section will be
essential for the WHO to effectively contribute to global improvement.
This section must not be diluted to something meaningless that
ultimately can be easily disregarded.

I would like to hear more on progress towards passing this essential
resolution.

E-DRUG: How can we promote rational use of medicines? (14)
----------------------------------------------------

Dear E-Druggers,

Though quiet, I have been keeping an eye on this, one of my favourite topics!
To follow up, as suggested by Jonathan, on the need to present a compelling and incontrovertible argument to convince uncommitted member states, one of the most useful tool is a good briefing paper. We can therefore go to our representatives with the facts and good arguments. Is anyone working on such a paper? Our network would be glad to make use of one!

Cheers.
