E-drug: Licensing /Registration of Veterinary Products (cont)
---------------------------------------------
For everyone's interest, Australia has a system whereby all veterinary
antimicrobials are evaluated by an independent advisory group for risk
analysis in regard to antimicrobial resistance, prior to consideration by
the regulator for efficacy and safety. This same group has an advisory role
also with the human side in regard to antimicrobial resistance, although
this role relates to availability rather than registrations. There are
currently proposals put to the government to strengthen the role of this
group - it has been recognised that antimicrobial resistance is a broad
issue impacting on human health on both the human medicines and the
agricultural use of antibiotics and that some expert group with experience
across both areas is necessary. At the veterinary level at least, it is
unusual for the regulator to approve the use of an antimicrobial in
veterinary practice if the independent advisory group advises against it.
