[e-drug] Literature review on anthrax (cont'd)

E-drug: Literature review on anthrax (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am grateful for the additional, but partially overlapping data which
Kirsten has submitted. I only wanted to mitigate the "Cipro
hysteria" by pointing to the fact that, even though FDA has
accepted the indication anthrax for ciprofloxacine, it has never been
properly tested in humans. The data on a handful of monkeys
would normally never have been acceptable to the FDA, so this
must have been a political decision, not a medical one. It is the FDA
which has forced closure of the Michigan vaccine plant - and during
the last few weeks I have not heard anything from them, except
that according to a press release they have now accepted
doxycycline as prophylactic and as treatment. Penicillin by injection
for a Gram-negative microorganism is not as strange as it seems,
because qid 1.000.000 U was normal accepted treatment for
Haemophilus influenzae before the advent of ampicillin. Besides
silence from Rockville, where is the voice of academic
bacteriologists and infectious diseases physicians? The only doctor
mentioned so far was the astute physician in a district hospital in
Florida, who was clever enough to correctly diagnose the first case,
and thereby probably saved many lives - He should be rewarded the
Congressional Medal of Honor or the like.

So... Let's hear what the American medical faculties and FDA have
to say.

Best wishes,
