[e-drug] Post-exposure prophylaxis for anthrax (cont'd)

E-drug: Post-exposure prophylaxis for anthrax (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry, I did not quote Mr.Thompson, but reports from WHO and
CDC from before 11 September. In addition, there is considerable
experience with penicillin (of course injections) in the treatment of
anthrax in Asia and Africa. The evidence with doxycycline and
penicillin is derived from treatment of patients. Ciprofloxacin has
never been tried in human anthrax. And; neither has norfloxacine
(patented in 1979) and pefloxacine (patented in 1979 and 1981),
which might be equally effective. The fluoroquinolones have a wide
range of side-effects and are contraindicated in young children and
pregnant women. FDA has just "released" the indication anthrax for
doxycycline. In Europe it is not a punishable offense to use a drug
outside officially ratified indications.

Best wishes,
