E-DRUG: medicines basket for chronic conditions
-----------------------------------------------
Dear e-druggers
I need your help to develop a list of 30 medicines commonly used,
particularly in developing countries, to treat major chronic diseases.
This 'core' list will be used to survey medicine prices, availability,
and standard treatment affordability using a methodology developed by
Health Action International (HAI) and WHO. We realise the pharmaceutical
sector is extremely variable, even in neighbouring countries, so in
addition to the core medicines we will encourage surveys to include
supplementary medicines that are important nationally.
The Noncommunicable Diseases section of WHO recently surveyed medicine
prices and affordability for major chronic diseases in Bangladesh,
Malawi, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The list of medicines they used
is below. I think this list could be improved. I question streptokinase
inj but not warfarin, nothing for epilepsy, nothing such as diclofenac
or ibuprofen for arthritis, nothing for depression, aminophylline tabs?,
erythromycin?, two strengths of methyldopa? prednisolone 25mg? etc.
Could you please have a look at this list and tell me what you would
keep (chronic not acute conditions) and what you would replace. Please
indicate the strength and dose form, as well as the medicine.
