[e-drug] Medicines Patent Pool Side-Events and Pre-Conferences at AIDS 2012

The Patent Pool will be hosting and participating several events on the occasion the 19th International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC and would like to invite any interested participants to addend. *PRE-CONFERENCES*

18 JULY: A CONSULTATION WITH THE MEDICINES PATENT POOL
The Patent Pool would like to invite LIVING2012 attendees, people living with HIV and their allies to a consultation with the Medicines Patent Pool on Wednesday 18 July 2012 from 14h00 to 17h00 in the Boardroom at 1875 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC.

The consultation aims to share information regarding the Pool and its work with individuals living with HIV and their allies while gathering feedback from attendees regarding the Pool’s work and priorities, access issues related to intellectual property, and how the Pool can most effectively work to improve access to affordable, safe treatment for HIV and AIDS.

20-21 JULY: FAITH & AIDS CONFERENCE
This interfaith pre-conference will bring together approximately 500 religious and community leaders, faith-based representatives, young people and people living with HIV at Howard University in Washington, DC to discuss the AIDS response.

The Patent Pool’s Esteban Burrone will speak at a plenary session on 21 July at 9am on challenges to scaling up access to antiretroviral treatment and possible solutions to achieving the international community’s commitment to universal access to HIV medicines.

25 JULY: THE FUTURE OF AFFORDABLE ART - TRENDS IN PATENTS AND PRICE
Oral Abstract Session at AIDS 2012, Session Room 7, 11:00 – 12:30 at the venue of the International AIDS Conference at the Walter E Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

Chan Park, the Medicines Patent Pool Executive Director (ad interim), will present the results of Patent Pool work to analyse current practices and key provisions in HIV voluntary licences, and their effect on public health outcomes.

25 JULY: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY - FOR US OR AGAINST US?
Oral Abstract Session at AIDS 2012, Session Room 8, 14:30 – 16:00 at the venue of the International AIDS Conference at the Walter E Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
Esteban Burrone, the Medicines Patent Pool Policy Advisor, will present an analysis of antiretroviral patent status in 69 low- and middle-income countries which sought to understand if patenting of HIV medicines is on the rise in developing countries.

25 JULY: THE MEDICINES PATENT POOL SATELLITE AT AIDS 2012
This satellite event, titled “Improving Access & Innovation in HIV Treatment: The Medicines Patent Pool and Other Approaches,” will take place at the venue for the International AIDS Conference at the Walter E Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, Session Room 5, from 18:30 – 20:30.

The event will focus on access and innovation challenges with a special focus on the role of intellectual property rights, the Medicines Patent Pool and other approaches aimed at improving access to drugs and promoting innovation in HIV medicines that meet developing country needs.

22 JULY - 27 JULY: THE MEDICINES PATENT POOL BOOTH AT AIDS 2012
The Medicines Patent Pool’s booth at the International AIDS Conference is number 168 in the main Exhibition Hall. Visitors to the booth from people wishing to ask questions or just learn more about the Pool are both welcome and encouraged. Contact us to set up meetings at specific times with specific Pool staff members.
