E-DRUG: New book on a public health model of drug research
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the past ten years, a stream of books have appeared that detail troubling practices by pharmaceutical companies that distort medical science, knowledge, and practice. Most new drugs provide few or no clinical advantages to offset substantial risks of serious harm. (For the evidence see

Some of these practices are being curtailed, but there seems to be no viable alternative to commercialized research funded through patents and high prices.

A new book by Donald Light and Antonio Maturo, GOOD PHARMA, describes an alternative, a large research institute that has learned how do research for better medicines using open science, no commercial influences, and no patenting that can distort each stage of research. It's a public health model of principled research, already in practice at the Mario Negri Institute and its 51 laboratories. The book describes how the Institute applies its ethical principles to research and to medical practice. See
