E-drug: New Drug Classes on Formularies (cont)
---------------------------------------------
Dear all
The body of literature is quite limited. The indicators for drug and
therapeutics committees in Australia recommend use of following information:
Balanced, comparative (against placebo and/or usual therapy) information on
safety and efficacy
Assessment of clinical need
Economic analysis
The most commonly used pieces of information to make a formulary decision by
DTCs are:
BY
efficacy - 83%
side effects - 71%
whether an alternative is available - 87%
indication - 64%
sponsor (clinician making the request) - 59%
estimated usage - 78%
drug cost - 80%
drug budget - 55%
cost-effectiveness - 67%
Scenario-based work confirmed the principle information used and showed
that the process involved significant consultation and discussion prior to
the meeting.
There is also some work published by Bochner F et al in the BMJ on a
prioritisation model for formulary addition. This is a controversial
approach but interesting.
