E-DRUG: New research synthesis - Biosecurity Research and Development
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear all,
We would like to share with you a new research synthesis on biosecurity
research and development (R&D) just published at the Knowledge Portal for
Innovation and Access to Medicines, a project of the Global Health Centre
at the Graduate Institute of Geneva. It is available at
https://www.knowledgeportalia.org/biosecurityrd
The military is a known actor in technological or defence research and
development (R&D), but its role in the (global) health R&D arena is not
widely understood. The actors in biosecurity R&D have expanded beyond
military agencies and evolved along with paradigms of health security.
This research synthesizes existing evidence on biomedical R&D
conducted by the military sector and/or relating to health security.
"Biosecurity R&D" refers to the development of medical products and
strategies to address biological threats to security often referred to as
'medical countermeasures (MCM)', and includes drugs, vaccines, and devices
to diagnose, treat, prevent, or mitigate potential health effects of
exposure to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agent.
The literature includes both military and non-military entities as actors
and focuses broadly on two areas: intentional use of CBRN agents to harm
health, i.e., bioterrorism (CBRN) and unintentional spread of infectious
diseases or pathogens of pandemic potential, such as COVID-19.
We welcome your comments and suggestions, in particular suggestions on gaps in the reviews and on interesting new research. You can use the
collaborative form at the Knowledge Portal or send us an email at

Best wishes and happy holiday season,
Marcela (and on behalf of Suerie and Temmy)
