E-DRUG: NGOs urge govt to boycott WHO meeting on definition of counterfeit drugs (6)
-------------------------------------------

I recomend the history of IMPACT which arises out of the work the WHO has conducted for many years. In fact it was the International Conference of Drug Regulators that voted in 2004 to develop strategies to combat counterfeit drugs based on the evidence of their circulation and clear danger to patients. At first the plan was to launch a convention but due to the opposition by some to a convention the IMPACT was formed instead.
All of this history is on the WHO web site including the background paper I wrote prior to the launch of IMPACT. This work is now followed by many other efforts - by public health professionals and drug regulators world wide. Suggestions that the IMPACT is an anti-generic movement are not substantiated by its history, its intent nor its current work product. Countries remain free to define a counterfeit as they wish subject to any applicable national or international legal requirements.
