E-DRUG: Pharmacy Laws
-----------------------
Dear all
We are in the process of revising a 50 year old legislation that
regulate Pharmacy practice in Kenya.I write to E-druggers who may
know any good sources of literature on this subject, which we may
domesticate to reflect the current best practices in the world.

E-DRUG: Pharmacy Laws (4)
-----------------------
Dear E-druggers
Dr Muhu Kahiga's request ("I write to E-druggers who may know any good sources of literature on this subject, which we may domesticate to reflect the current best practices in the world") raises an interesting issue. There is little in the peer reviewed literature about pharmacy legislation, but many countries do now place their legislation on various web sites. The extent to which those laws can easily be adopted in other countries, particularly developing countries that were previously colonised, depends on the basic legal system in place (e.g. largely based on English vs. French law), the legal drafting approach (detailed laws vs. enabling laws to be accompanied by secondary legislation such as regulations) and the existence of statutory bodies to give effect to such laws (e.g. independent regulatory councils for health professions, medicines regulatory authorities).
Given the common heritage, South Africa's post-apartheid legislation may be instructive, and can be downloaded from:
* SA Pharmacy Council web site - http://www.pharmcouncil.co.za/ - search under <Documents> for the Pharmacy Act, various Regulations and the Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) standards
* SA Medicines Control Council web site - http://www.mccza.com/ - look under <Acts and Regulations> for the Medicines and related Substances Act and General Regulations
* SA National Dept of Health web site - http://www.doh.gov.za/ - look under the <Cluster Pharmaceutical Policy and Planning> for the National Drug Policy and Norms for establishing pharmacies and then follow the link to <Pharmaceutical Management Information System>, <Licensing issues> for details on the way in which ownership of pharmacies is regulated
