E-drug: Pharmacy Profession in Kenya (cont)
---------------------------------------------
Dear e-druggers,

The subject of Pharmacy practice in Kenya is undergoing a lot of
debate. Well, this does not surprise me as the law that governs the
practice has undergone minimal review since independence (1963).

Most of what is in the current law was borrowed from our colonial
masters, Britain. Hence there are similarities in practice between
Kenya and Britain.Indeed Kenyan trained pharmacists have sat the
necessary exams in Britain and US and are currently practising there.

Likewise post independence most Kenyan Pharmacists were trained in
either Scotland Britain or Russia and are currently practising in
Kenya. In short the practice of Pharmacy in Kenya is not any
different from other countries as it is being portrayed by some of my
colleagues in Kenya.

Changes in the law governing the practice have come to age and are to
be discussed by our legislators soon.

A lot of consultation has been done among the stakeholders regarding
the bill before discussion in parliament and I'm sure everything
possible will be done by our legislators to ensure a law is enacted
that will be in the best healthcare interest of our people. This has
been attested by our capable minister for Health in Kenya.

Whereas some stakeholders may wish to seek opinions of what is the
situation in other countries through this forum, it is important that
objective information is given to avoid confusion and they should
preferably desist from attacking each other on international forums
over local issues.
