E-drug: Pharmacy Profession in Kenya
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear e-druggers,
The Pharmacy profession in Kenya is going through a crisis. In the
current law, the practice of a Pharmacist is carried out by a Bachelor
of Pharmacy graduate from the University of Nairobi or an equivalent
qualification from a recognized university, who must undergo a further
one year internship and also pass a forensic Pharmacy examination
which is given by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of the Ministry of
Health. Currently, at University of Nairobi, Pharmacy undergraduates
undergo a rigorous five year course.
There is another cadre of pharmacy care providers in the country-
Pharmaceutical Technologists- who undergo a one year taught course
at a middle level college and a year of practical training.
Pharmaceutical Technologists are supposed to work under the
supervision of a Pharmacist, but they want the law to be changed so
as to allow them to carry out the practice of Pharmacy independently.
They object to being licensed to practise at a lower level as
Pharmaceutical Technologists.
I am interested in receiving information from e-druggers from other
countries to practise Pharmacy:
- What is the entry point for registration to practice as a Pharmacist?
- What other cadres of pharmacy-care providers exist (in other
countries) and what are the provisions in the law?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Prof. I. O. Kibwage
Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry,
Faculty of Pharmacy,
University of Nairobi.
