[e-drug] Pharmacy Profession in Kenya (cont'd)

E-drug: Pharmacy Profession in Kenya (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Prof. Kibwage,

Just to confirm the situation in the UK. There are two cadres of
pharmacy personnel - pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

A pharmacy technician must work under the supervision of a
pharmacist in either hospital pharmacy or community pharmacy. They
are not permitted to sell, supply or dispense medicines except under
pharmacist supervision. Pharmacy technicians undergo a specific
training which is classified as vocational training. The theoretical
studies are taken on a part time basis whilst working in a hospital
pharmacy or community pharmacy. It is worth noting that the
technicians role, particularly in hospitals, has become very important
as the have taken over many basic tasks related to drug procurement
and supply, This releases pharmacists to be more involved in the
clinical setting and providing pharmaceutical care.

A person can register as a pharmacist with the Royal Pharmaceutical
Society of Great Britain only after successfully completing two
activities:

1) a 4 year pharmacy degree course at a university
2) a one year of practice training (pre-registration year) working
under the supervision of a registered pharmacist which concludes
with a national examination set by the Royal Pharmaceutical
Society of Great Britain. This pre-registration year has clearly
   defined learning objectives.

The pharmacy degree alone does not qualify a person to register and
practice as a pharmacist. The pre-registration year and success in the
Society exam are compulsory.

I hope that this helps you in coping with the crisis.

Good wishes.

Paul
