E-drug: Planning and Managing Information Systems Training Course
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Colleagues,
Management Sciences for Health is currently inviting applications for
our Management Training Course Planning and Managing Information
Systems, which is to be held this year in Boston, Massachusetts USA
from July 9-21.
This year's course will build upon the successful experiences of
previous years and will highlight new features, including an
introduction to the soon-to-be-released EpiInfo 2000, the Windows
version of the statistical analysis and disease surveillance software
developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (All
participants will receive the software and manual to take home to
their organizations).
The course will be facilitated by senior staff members from MSH's
Information for Management (INFORM) Program. It is designed for all
mid- to senior-level health care managers working in developing
countries for whom effective information management is of vital
importance.
The course assists participants to master the key principles, concepts
and processes of a Health Management Information System (HMIS), so
that they are well equipped to make sound, well informed decisions.
It does not require proficiency in the use of computers.
The course focuses on
* Key concepts in management information systems
* Health program monitoring and evaluation
* HMIS development, including useful applications of information
technology
* Design and undertaking of an HMIS assessment
* Linking of information and its presentation to decisions and action
In addition to learning through instruction and interactive exercises,
participants from a diversity of countries and backgrounds learn from
their own lively exchange of ideas and knowledge. Through a site
visit to a local health institution, participants will work
collectively to assess an existing HMIS, and to draw lessons of
relevance to their own institutions. Participants leave the course
with a selection of field-tested tools that they can use to design,
implement and improve an HMIS upon their return home.
MSH does not provide sponsorship for course participation. Those
interested in attending should seek support from international,
national and local organizations working to strengthen health care
systems in their country.

We hope you can join us in what promises to be an important and
exciting management development event.
Sincerely yours,
MSH Management Training
