E-drug: Polypharmacy in India (cont)
---------------------------------------------
Very interesting indeed! One aspect of the glorious cocktail,
pentoxifyllin, interests me in particular. While recently working in
primary health care for 6 weeks in Kosovo/a (the 'a' spelling preferred by
the Albanians), I noted many patients use pentoxifylline/Trental (R).
Indications were very varied, but ususally hypertension/angina/restless
legs/diabetes. It is not registered in Sweden, but in many other European
countries. Looking for documentation about its alleged effects in
peripheral vascular disease, I found only 2 articles written in the 1990's
(see below), none of which appear to touch this indication.

Does anybody know of what documentation is used in its marketing? The
quality of this? Other comments?

1. Parikh et al. Serum tumor necrosis factor for monitoring response of
hepatic veno- occlusive disease to pentoxiphyllin--a case report. Cancer
Invest 1997, Vol 15, iss 4, p 326-8

2. Mandi et al. Effects of pentoxifyllin and PentaglobinO on TNF and IL-6
production in septic patients. Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung 1995, Vol 42,
iss 3, p 301-8
